Plasma Ceramide test is now available at Mayo Clinic Medical Laboratories

Plasma Ceramides predict adverse cardiovascular events. Elevated plasma ceramide concentrations are risk factors for cardiovascular mortality, myocardial infarction and acute coronary syndrome hospitalizations. Plasma ceramides are independent of traditional lipid tests such as: LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol. Individuals having LDL- and HDL-cholesterol levels in normal range may have elevated ceramides and thus having hidden risk for adverse cardiovascular events. The test is valuable for patients having coronary artery disease and patients with history or clinical suspicion for acute coronary syndrome or a myocardial infarction. The test is also beneficial for individuals without previous symptoms of heart disease, as nearly half of all heart attacks occur without any symptoms.
